Juban (undershirt)
The juban is an inner garment, shaped like a kimono and worn under the kimono by both men and women.
It is innerwear but worn over underwear such as pants or slips.
The rule is that when wearing a kimono other than a yukata, juban must be worn regardless of the season.
It is worn so that the collar appears slightly to overlap when the kimono is layered on top of it.
The juban serves to keep sweat and other stains away from the kimono.
It is important to match the sleeve size of the juban to that of the kimono.
The women’s version is slightly shorter in overall length than the kimono. For men, kimono and liner are almost the same length. In both the men’s and women’s, juban do not have the narrow front panel part of the kimono (the okumi).
