Houmongi or Visiting kimono (Semi-formal kimono for women)
Similar to a tsukesage but more elaborately decorated is the Houmongi or Visiting kimono.
A Visiting kimono is worn by women and is closer to formal attire.
When the kimono is unfolded, the patterns connect across the seams, just like a painting.
The fabric is dyed before the kimono is constructed, and so its assembly requires advanced craftmanship.
When worn, as well as being continuous across the entire garment, the pattern is characterized by a congratulatory theme. The material is silk.
There are two types of visiting kimonos: one with a family crest and the other without. This gorgeous kimono is perfect for wearing at a friend’s wedding.
It is also worn for other formal occasions such as children’s ceremonies and parties, and, as the name suggests, when visiting other people’s homes.
Another type of kimono worn for similar occasions is the ‘Iromuji’ (meaning kimono without colours).
It is a kimono dyed in solid colors other than black, very simple but highly prestigious, and can be worn for the same kind of occasion as the Visiting kimono.
