Haori (kimono outerwear)
Haori look like short kimono and are worn over kimono like a jacket.
There are haori that are waist-length or slightly shorter than the kimono.
As well as length, the haori is distinguished from a kimono by the absence of the ‘okumi’, a narrow panel measuring about 20cm in width, part of the front body of the kimono.
A haori, like a jacket, serves more than one purpose, including, adding a layer of warmth, to protect the kimono worn underneath, and to denote formal attire.
There are several types of haori.
There are also rules on how to match these with kimono, so please refer to the following for guidance.
