KIMONO dictionary
Japanese Kimono
There are various types of kimono, the traditional dress of Japan.
Of the many types of kimono, most are for women, and are defined by the occasion on which they are worn. The appropriateness of a kimono is also determined by those with whom you are experiencing the occasion.
Kimono can be broadly divided into formal wear and non-formal wear.
Kimonos for formal wear include those worn for a wedding as well as for more solemn occasions, such as a funeral.
Non-formal occasions for which kimonos might be worn include eating out and other special outings.
Most kimonos are made of silk, but cotton and linen kimonos are also available.
Fabrics are woven and dyed, and patterns are varied and beautiful.
Often, auspicious patterns are used, and it is one of the pleasures of kimono to understand the meaning and origin of their design.
It takes many craftsmen and a great deal of time to create and complete a single kimono.
